Our Speaker: Mary Beth Norton
Subject: The Salem Witch Trials: A New Approach
Mary Beth Norton is the Mary Donlon Alger Professor of American History at Cornell University, In 2005-6 she was Pitt Professor of American History at the University of Cambridge. She is the ideal speaker to round out our year long 50th anniversary celebration. She spoke to us in 1972 about her first book, The British-Americans, which dealt with the fate of the loyalists in England. Her book, Liberty's Daughters (1980) broke new ground in regard to women’s roles in the Revolution. Founding Mothers and Fathers (1996) was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In the Devil’s Snare is a revelatory new look at the women, both the victims and the accusers, in the Salem Witch Trials. Don’t miss this visit by one of our foremost historians.
We will gather as usual at the Williams Club, 24 East 39th Street at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6. As usual, we would like everyone’s reservation in advance. The stamp-deprived can call Jim Davis at 718 762 2817 or email him at JamesDavisW@AOL.com . If you have any questions about the menu, contact Jim either by phone or email.
